    Help! Lyman 48S 03A3 on 1903

New to the forum and just picked up a 1903 with a Lyman 48S 03A3 rear sight. The serial # looks like 1918 but the barrel is from 1937. I did a quick search and other than forum posts (how I found this forum), I could not locate any information on this site (no owners manual, youtube videos, nothing). Please help with any links or directions. Thanks.

You have a late model Lyman 48 micrometer adjustable receiver sight from the 1970's The 03A3 nomenclature indicates that the base is factory modified so that it can be mounted on an 03A3 without modifying either the receiver or the sight base. On the original Lyman 48, the top of the sight base butted up against the rear receiver bridge. When the M1903 receiver was modified to the 03A3 receiver, the width of the boss on the receiver bridge was modified to allow the mounting of the 03A3 rear sight. This made the rear bridge too wide for the mounting of the original Lyman 48. Lyman developed to 03A3 version with the top of the receiver sight based shortened to accommodate the 03A3. If your elevation slide is calibrated to "60", you have the standard sight. If it goes to "105" it is the long slide version designed or 1000 yard shooting which sold for $2.00 extra. The sight should be calibrated rot 1/4 minute adjustments if mounted on the 03A3 with the standard 24" barrel. Hope this helps.

The side piece on my #48 appears to me much longer than the standard #48.. I now see one just like mine on FLEBAY and it says Type 48 for Springfield 1903....

Ok; my slide runs to 60. I'm still looking for information on how to mount it (only can see the screw head of 1 screw) and then I need to learn how to actually sight the rifle with it.

Ok; checked mine tonight and the slide goes to 60. I'll try and attach pictures. My questions remain though; how do I mount it (I can see the one screw but not the head of the other) and how to I actually sight it? Thanks again for any help. https://www.milsurps.com/vbpgimage.p...7&d=1452736353

The other screw is under the slide and the longer elevation slide version is the 48S. Don't screw around, take it to a gunsmith for mounting. Then go to the range and zero it at 100 yds, without moving the adjustments set the elevation stop screw then zero the elevation turret scale and slide the index (tiny pointer on the side with the slot) to "0" and you're done.

The receiver is tapped for mounting already; just need to mount it back into the screw holes. Thanks!

Just make sure the Lyman sight does not make contact with the stock and there is elevation screw clearance in the stock.

Got it; will post a pic later tonight for review; it looks like whoever owned this rifle before me took pretty good care of it and kinda "knew what they were doing" with it as far as using it for distance shooting. I bought it from my FFL who had it on consignment from a guy; the guy's uncle or someone owned it and had passed away. The FFL thought it might be set-up for "national match" shooting as the serial # was from '18 and the barrel was pretty darn flawless and from '37.

Looks good, the rear sight in the photo is sitting high off the receiver so make sure your back stop is high enough to retain a bullet a foot high at 100 yards when you sight it in.
