line-outs

Hi guys, a freind just had me look at his carbine to see how correct it was. It turns out that we found it had all Underwood parts except for the receiver which we thought was an Inland (and it was) but is a line-out with, I think a .U. above the lined out Inland, the serial # duplicated in front of the sight and a flaming bomb at the back of the receiver. I believe these are relatively uncommon and haven't seen one before but have heard of them. How rare is this and does it have much collectors value? He was going to sell it but my advice was to keep it and put on a nicer stock than the butt-ugly SA M2 that it came with. TIA, Steve

Between Oct. 1942 ans Sept. 1943 Inland shipped 12,210 receivers to Underwood. Line outs in general are rare and considered worth more but yours has had the serial number stamped in front of the rear sight quite often done during a rebuild and that may take some of the value from it as does the replacement Springfield Armory stock. hth

Even with the restamped number, it is still one of the scarce carbines. He should hang on to it. Its a good collector's item.

what would you guys to estimate one to be worth. i just found one come up. its clean, with all postwar upgrades, and i think the barrel is replacement, dated '44

Value depends on condition and number of "correct" parts. But an Inland lineout Underwood should be worth between $900 and $1200.

About a year ago I bought a Underwood lineout to Winchester with all correct Winchester parts including stock(not sure of originality but looks like that's possible given finish , wear, etc) Seeing this topic made me wonder what it might be worth above that of the regular makers carbines. I think I paid around $750 or so for it.

You got a good deal. Although there were more Underwoods sent to Winchester than there were Inland lineouts to Underwood, there were quite a number of different variants in markings within that group.
