Do you remember these men? Movie/tv stars MILITARY SERVICE

    DO YOU REMEMBER THESE MEN?
I do. Had to google photos to remind me of the faces to go with the names.
Very humbling to relize the service of these men who I grew up watching in so many great
    movies & TV ptograms.

I can only send this to people of our generation, since most of today’s people don't have any idea who these men were...and that's a pity. They were all heroes in their own right and made America great in it's own right! Back then Hollywood went to war!

I would think things would have to get very dire for a future "who's who" list of entertainment people to look like anything like that.

The modern term of artist and celebrity is almost the antonym of selfless service, society observations aside, I imagine most of the people on that list served first and became entertainers afterwards though.

The post script on the email as sent to me made this point a little less politely. I deletetd it as it was a bit political.

Sorry I did not proof read the thread title.

    Do You remember?

I fixed the title for you. BTW, George Kennedy died yesterday. He joined as an enlisted man after Pearl Harbor and left the service as a captain sixteen years later.

John Wayne was not declared 4F from college football injuries. The man purportedly did most of his own stunts and was certainly fit enough to join the military. He was, at his request, given 3-A status, "deferred for family dependency reasons." He told friends he'd enlist after he made just one or two more movies but then produced thirteen movies during the war, many with war-related themes. He made a small effort to sign up, sending in the paperwork to enlist in the naval photography unit commanded by his good friend, director John Ford in 1944 but nothing came of it. Wayne received a 2-A classification, "deferred in support of national interest" but a month later the Selective Service decided to revoke many previous deferments and reclassified him 1-A. But Wayne's studio appealed and got his 2-A status reinstated until after the war ended. In my opinion, he couldn't carry water for the likes of Durning, James, Albert, Stewart and certainly not for Audie Murphy or the millions of other named and nameless soldiers, sailors and airmen who served during that horrible war. Thanks for this list, these people deserve recognition for more than their film careers, save one. Tom

John Wayne, WWII, and the Draft

Here is one of the best stories I have read regarding John Wayne, WWII, and the draft. Seems the author conducted a fair amount of research in writing the story.

The writer of this piece decries Wayne dissenters as being "liberal" and "left wing" yet he writes for Breitbart an overtly conservative publication. There are no political views necessary, just facts. Rather than cut and paste, I would only suggest that anyone interested, read the comments at the bottom of this article as they thoroughly debunk the "facts" therein. Regards. Tom

If I was in a stoush I would rather have the man next to me wanting to be there than one who did not and possibly was liable to funk it - the AIF in WWI was purely voluntary "A great adventure" and conscription was re-soundly defeated by the people of the day when they tried to pull that stunt more than once Billy Hughes undoing I dare say, sadly for allot it was the last time they saw Australiaicon and for the many other Allies that helped the cause "We will remember them" actually ANZAC day is looming I proudly wear my fathers medals in recognition of all the servicemen & women who went away to all the wars our country has been involved in.

And as I have said it was a great thing when finally they recognized the Korean war vets and the Vietnam veterans, when the Vietnam vets came home they were shunned very badly and mocked and I felt pretty darn sad for our soldiers who went away it was a despicable act by those that are not worth even calling themselves Australians.
