Good hands on helps, still the DI's will break it down and start over. Leave him with the thought to be a sponge not a font of knowledge when he arrives and all will be well.

Until then, attempt to burn it out...or wear it in very, very well.
    Regards, Jim

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. Never be first, never be last, and never stand out in a crowd.

And if the staff asks a general question like: "Who can drive a manual?" or "Who wants a weekend pass?" tell him to keep his damned hand down, they don't care, they are just looking for "volunteers" for some crap duty.

The grey man, at the end of the course a staff member looks at a man and asks "Who's section was he in?" Middle third...

Of course I need to go over what not to do or never bring attention or if asked in a nice way like Darren said "can you drive a manual" never raise your hand. Basic Training also involves finding the gullible and watch out for the Head Games. I signed up for Infantry just like my Dad did and he sat me down and taught me lots of stuff about the Corp. I am very proud of Nephew/Godson wanting to go to the Marine Corps and get this he signed up for Infantry. He's my Nephew and Godson and he asked me for help, so I'm going to help him.
