Not being glib, but I did see a number of those surfacing in footage of the early days of the recent Syrian civil war/rebellion. LOL
Can't say whose they originally were, but they were clearly FAL/SLR pattern rifles.

Fascinating to see how the Lee Enfields are still being used in Afghanistan, along with the Mosin Nagants. What was so interesting to me about the Long Branch "sniper" was its standard battlefield configuration -- never was it intended to be a sniper -- no bracket for a scope. And also interested to see the comment about the CIA supplying Enfields to the insurgents during the 1980s. I wonder if SentryDuty's observation of one the "beech blonds" was one of the Irish Contract surplus rifles?

Very interesting thread and thanks to all who posted.
In 2010 had a visitor from Poland (commando) who did two tours in Afghanistan and he told me several times he saw Lee Enfields. IIRC he said he saw a fair amount of No1's.
Why use a 50 pound bomb when a 500 pound bomb will do?

Certainly looks like a No.1 Mk.1, but isn't the butt disc in the wrong place? Some of the "Khyber Pass" products look remarkably convincing, from a distance. Could be just a locally made butt of course.

I gather the munitions stocks were never found, bit like to rumor of a certain prime minister going cap in hand to the NATO alliance for some missiles from their stocks to help regain the Falkland islands may be true may be false but that is the rumor.

That one is very true, AIM9 L Sidewinders for one .. well, there have to be some plus points to being in a Private Members Club!

True Gil, but a competent shot with a serviceable No4 is just as dangerous, as we all know .303 is a very hard hitting round and not one I would like to face mate!

I knew it was true just thought I would highlight a fact that might not be common knowledge, but lets be honest given the day it surely proved a point determined pilots with courage caused severe grief to the fleet
I would agree with the venerable 303 it may be a design over 100 y/o but it can still hurt you.

I doubt the SMLE there is a "Khyber Pass" special. I have seen a few of them and they do look ok from a distance. However, I've never yet seen one with a magazine cutoff. Doesn't mean they didn't do them of course, but that one looks like a Brit original to me.
