Large AAG arsenal mark on scant stock?

    Hey guys,

Does a large AAG on the left wrist of a Springfield scant stock indicate inspection by Augusta Arsenal Georgia? Looked in Brophy's and all arsenal markings that start with AA are Augusta Arsenal, AAG is not listed. Does the G stand for Georgia?

The proof P on the bottom of the wrist is serifed with rectangular border. Thought I read somewhere that was used at the San Antonio Arsenal?

Stock is a beauty and was never reworked.

    (1) No. "G" is the last initial of the inspector.

    (2) You read correctly. But I don't recall anyone stating that San Antonio Arsenal retained exclusive use of the boxed "P".

    Hope this helps.

As I recall, Red River Arsenal used the "square" P as well, didn't they?

Yes. But Red River inherited it from San Antonio.

John, Where did you find out that the last letter was the initial of the inspector? I have often wondered whether the letter indicated a time period or year. Have you ever seen a list of the inspectors at Augusta?

I have an Ordnance Dept. document from about 1921 which clearly states that the last letter is the inspector's last initial.

I have identified only one inspector who was assigned to Augusta on a temporary basis (about six months).

The letter was "L" and the time period was 1921. I have a photo of the stamp and two separate Ordnance documents certifying the inspector's identity.

John, Thank you. Hopefully, someday we will have the names of all the inspectors at Augusta and can establish a timeframe for each of the different stamps used.
