A Mexican Army 8mm Pieper Revolver

I have seen photos of the odd 8mm revolving carbine used by Mexico, but this was new to me.

Just picked it up, and haven't done a pull apart, yet!

Photos in a couple of hours....

Quick preliminaries:








You don't think somebody was a little worried that it might not be recognized as Mexican Army issue? Top strap, cylinder, AND sideplate.


Kind thoughts and leverage look like all that holds the cartridge support block forward when the trigger is pulled!


Lanyard cut away some time back. May fabricate a replacement if I can get a better idea what it looked like, exactly. (Meaning at least rough dimensions!)

The Russian 7,62x38R is on the left and the 8mm Pieper is on the right. This cartridge in the photo was loaded by UMC, by 1916 the factory loading
is not listed. The 8 mm Pieper fired a 106 gr FMJ at 1150 FPS (Remington load) the longer carbine barrel would increase the velocity.

You do not find revolvers or carbines around and if you do the condition is not that nice, these were introduced into Mexico around 1893 (approx.)

Just like the Nagant or Lebel. Not really a rare idea. Doesn't look like it, no room for the cylinder to move laterally.

The French Lebel revolver uses standard cartridges and not the "gas seal" type that the Nagant revovers are designed to chamber

The Lebel revolver cylinder opens on the right side too ! I know you can make 8mm Lebel revolver cases from the 32-20 Winchester - but I don't know how
you would make 8mm Pieper ?

In theory this revolver uses the gas seal principal. Cylinder slides fore and aft during operation. I would need a cartridge to see if it actually enters the back end of the barrel. If it does, it would not be by much!

Thinking 7,62 Nagant cases could be made to work if the gas seal feature isn't required. The base diameter seems very similar. Chamber diameter at the rear is about 0.342"

Lebel revolver rounds look like normal revolver cartridges, just small.
