SN 43018. Is it a rifle or carbine ? Any history ?

43077 was a rife kept at SA for MV tests. Next one down to that is 43142 and it's listed as the same thing. I wonder if they were all kept for a long serial range to do that very thing? Both were rifles. 42990 was with the 8th inf...
