Spanish Reformado Cartridges

Brought home what turned out to be quite a variety of old Spanish Reformado rounds in a 20 count box. Dates range from the 1870s to the mid 1890s. Very non-uniform overall lengths and definite changes in bullets.

All the bullets do seem to have a very short "full size" section at the rear with a straight taper going forwards until forward of the front groove. Doen't seem to be all that uniform a taper though! Weird.

Rear of the bullet I pulled apart from the cartridge by hand measures 0.450"

Underneath the bullet was a thick wad on top of a compressed black powder charge. (Have yet to weight it.)

Not too sure of the wad construction. It may have been separate thin sheets when new.



No firearm to go with them. Was just curious, having never seen any before!

I have some of these that came to me in the '80s. Probably not quite as fine shape though.

Neat rounds. Not sure if all the same, but the P M H headstamps come from a rustic arsenal in Havana, Cuba.

Better than hoped! Read somewhere that US forces seized over one million rounds whilst in Cuba.

Yours probably spent some time at Bannerman's Island in NYC.
