WW2 Winchester Model 97 riot shotgun

Here are some pictures of a WW2 model 97 riot shotgun. Do you think this gun is correct? Serial number is 915059.

Nice old gun. That one has sure been around the world. I had a model 25 riot that had been a prison shotgun. It was about worn out. I wish I still had that one though.

The martial markings do not look correct. Also, the buttstock is the earlier type found on WW1 1897s.

Does it have a W mark underneath the serial number?

It has a E over the serial number. The martial markings are my concern also. I went and looked at the gun today. The ordnance bomb on top of the barrel is offset about 3/8 of an inch to the right of the center line axis. The US appears to be different, the periods are stamped higher than what I have seen. I received some info from Cody Museum archives, they said that the serial number 915059 was stamped 16 Sept 1940. could this be a procurement gun. The stampings have been on this gun along time. No inspector stamp on the stock. Would there be a number stamped on the barrel with the early gun? Thanks

"Would there be a number stamped on the barrel with the early gun?"

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Barrel should have the date on the underside near the receiver (2 digit number like 39 or 40), and it should be marked CYL if it's a real riot gun.

The bomb on the barrel is also incorrect.

The barrel is stamped CYL on the left side of the barrel. I did not know that all barrels are date stamped. I could not see it, would have to take the tube off to see lower on the barrel. It sounds like that is most likely not military. Thanks for all your help. Steve

Marking looks on point but see if you can get an expert's point of view. I'd rather dish out the extra time / cash and get a pro's opinion. Good luck though and thanks for sharing the pics. Still looks awesome
