possible alternate cartridge (6.35x53mm) for the early AR-15

During 1958 & 1959 Winchester developed the 25 Winchester cartridge (6.35x48mm) by necking down the old 25 Remington. The velocity with a 70 grain bullet was 3.345 fps while the duplex used two 53 gr bullets at 2600 & 2460 fps. Note how this cartridge fits in the AR15 magazine. This might have been an excellent choice

That's sort of where some of this development is today, 70 gr bullet(more or less) and about 6mm...

Always seems to come back to the 6-7mm area. The Brits had it right with the .280 round, if it had been properly adopted instead of 7.62 Nato we likely wouldn't even be debating caliber.

It's true, we sure could do a big circle of discussion on bullet size again...and again...

Well, had our American cousins (and NATO bank rollers) not insisted on the squashed .30-06 round to justify the M14icon design, we have had our .280 round as the standard calibre.

The AR15 would have been chambered in it from the off and it would have (in some version) probably still been in service today..

If my Aunt had a couple things... I'd like to shoot a qualification with this pictured cartridge and see what things look like. Mind you...maybe not the run down portion any more?

Jim, would you want the Duplex cartridge or ball cartridge to shoot a qualification ?

I liked the 280 too and also the 7x49mm Liviano that FN sold to Venezuela for their early FAL rifles

I'd like to do either or both. Duplex would have a distinct issue with guys counting holes...twice as many...and perhaps a bit spread.
