Thanks everyone for the replies. I've already done the cut on a damaged No 4 stock and inserted the patch. Just waiting for the handguard to arrive and have the barrel fitted. I'll post a before and after when it's done, once again thanks for the measurements.

(all measurements taken from the rear of the handguard)

    overall length=225.42mm

length to the barrel band groove=201.61mm

    barrel band groove=11.11mm

remainder, from front of groove cut to front of handguard=12.7mm

Handguard manufacturers were both Fazakerly (F) and BSA (M47A).

Best of luck with the project.
Thanks so much for your efforts. Just what I wanted. Bob

Not to revive an old thread but I am in the same position. I am going to try to make a No. 4 stock and handguard work for my No. 5. Does anyone know how the slot/groove for the barrel band is cut into the wood? What tools do you use and how deep is the cut? Any other info. would be appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. Just normal wood tools for this one...nothing magic... Be very careful and work slowly. Hand fitting is just a slow process.

BAR is right. I've modded quite a few No4 forends to No5 spec over the years, & as Peter also said, it's not difficult, you just need to work slowly & carefully. You will need to slim down the No4 wood & re-cut the barrel band slot. I don't have the measurements for the siting of the re-cut band slot for the No5 handy, but no doubt someone will help here. If you could get hold of an original No5 guard it would be a little easier as it will act as a template for locating the cuts for the band on the modded forend. If you use a patch for the lightening groove slot from the severed front bit of No4 forend you will also avoid the problem of getting a colour match for the patch. Waste not want not!

Please don't hack up an unmodified no. 4 fore end for this! They are hard enough to find as it is.
