That sounds as if the bits are more-or-less present, but something is jamming. If you can get the barrelled action out of the stock without damaging anything, the reason may be obvious. Check for a foreign body protruding out of the magazine tube and jamming the spoon.

I once had a 71/84 in my hands where the sliding button on the end of the magazine spring had disappeared and the free end of the spring was the culprit. Forcing the spoon up would have ruined the end of the spring, hence my serious advice: DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING !!!

As far at the tube goes, take the spring out and if the cap slides up and down freely, I would not mess with it. Bent tubes are probably the second most common problem with these after the broken selector and they are bent from being removed. Normally the lifter will lift with a sharp pull to the bolt, there is about an 8th inch extra the bolt has to go back. I don't remember if the broken selector prevents lifting or dropping but that's the first thing I'd address.

I find the rifles fascinating and can't help but think the Frenchicon copied the lifter and tube magazine for their Lebels from it. Very similar. Of course both could be copied from the Swissicon, but not as similar.

    Good luck with the restoration
Both the Mauser 71/84 and the Lebel magazine and feed came from the Kropatschek rifle design... Alfred von Kropatschek was Austrian!

    Hello Boristhepig,

Were you able to get the magazine tube to move?

I took the tube out of one today and confirmed it must come out at least a 1/2", maybe a bit more to clear the action.

Update, due to number of different things have only just gotten around to having another look at the rifle. After a few applications of oil and some coaxing, managed to move the tube far enough forward to release the the action. Barrel channel of stock had a crack running along, tube had gone rusty in places causing crack. Opening up crack just slightly and more oil allowed complete tube removal. Tube has a few small rust holes and surface rust and pitting but should clean up Okay.
Hope to have a free day at the weekend to make some more progress.
