    Ishapore No1 MkIII question.

Any parts made for No1 MKIII will fit on an Ishapore No1 MKIII 1919? Or some parts are not compatible?

Jim is correct. The Ishapore products were completely interchangeable with those made by Britishicon manufacturers and were issued as needed to all Commonwealth forces as and where needed. The work met the same standards required by the British military.

Keep in mind though, that the 2A1 Rifle was chambered for the 7.62 X 51 NATO ammunition starting circa 1963, while still made to a high standard to meet Indian Government requirements, is no longer fully interchangeable with the No. 1 Mk. III.

But remember this. Your/these rifles were made in the days before perfect interchangeability and in the days of REAL Armourers as opposed to todays 'armourers' who some call (not me you understand......!) parts changers. So it follows that they are not 'part out, new part in' era rifles. Most of the parts are selectively and/or hand fitted.

The bits you need for this should be an easy fix though Buster. As our good Captain says, yes, a bit of fitting, but screws and such should all fit.

I noticed that too BAR and given the hardness of the cocking pieces, wondered how the number stamps fared afterwards. Or how the cocking piece didn't fracture or otherwise suffer during the process. Any comments on the structure Bruce in Oz or JM out of interest?

It may well be that the Indian cocking pieces are "differentially" hardened, as is specified on teh drawings.

Thus, the front end would be almost "hard" and the rear, into which you must screw the striker and the striker keeper screw, would be left "tough", but not "dead soft".

The drawing for the early "rounded" cocking piece shows the following:

Overall: Cast steel, hardened, tempered and oil blacked.

The detail of the heat treatment of the forwards section is interesting.

From the rear of the locking bolt recess to the front of the full bent: "Hardened.
From the rear of the locking bolt recess to the half-cock bent: "Spring tempered".
From the rear of the half-ck bent to the front of the Full-cock bent: "Tempered, Straw".

Let's see if my attached drawing works.......

I've noted numbered cocking pieces on all my pre WW1 BSA's.
