    Afternoon all,

Well its like Siberia here and I am still stuck in the office ... also missed out on this ex NZ L2A1

Australian SLR L2a1 - Deactivated - MILWEB CLASSIFIEDS

Its the first (deactivated) example I have seen in the UKicon complete with top cover mounted sight ... slightly miffed, but hay ho, you can't have everything, where would you put it all???

Anyway, some L1A1 goodness to start the weekend the right way chaps..

    Afternoon Geoff,

my L1 collection has grown since I took those pics, added a couple more L1's and my Malay contract L2. About done now though. It's only the unobtainable rocking horse poo examples left to collect, a Fal trails rifle and a Canadianicon C1 .. Skiprats got the only trials rifle in Civvy street that I have ever seen and I have never seen a C1 on the UKicon market.

That said, before Friday I had never seen a deac NZicon contract L2A1 ether, so you never know...

The C1 could probably be had by obtaining one live from a Canadianicon Prohib collector and having it done to UKicon spec for shipment...I wonder if that would fly?

I carried one of those bipod hogs while I was in, once in mortar platoon and once in Reconnaissance platoon...also when I was on leadership course for a while... I used a hose clamp to hole the bipod up and used it like a BAR instead. Too bad you didn't get it anyway...
    Regards, Jim

    Cheers Jim,

Thanks to your help I am working on building a C1 from the back sight down!

Its a nice thought obtaining an example form Canadaicon, but the thought of being responsible for "chopping" a C1 (particularly as its now an engendered inch pattern species) is a step too far for me!

Interesting idea with the hose clamp. It did occur to me while I was rebuilding my L2A1 that the bipod design was somewhat less than optimum shall we say. I would have thought it was an accurate rifle on single shot though?

    Cheers, John.

    Modest beginnings...

They were OK but not like it was a match rifle or anything. The heavy barrel was simply to expose more area to air, to allow air to take the heat away. Their best use was during suppression, but not on auto as many seemed apt to do. Keep them firing singles at a much faster rate, then they'd be on target. Fire one at a time so there was no lull in firing during a mag change. Otherwise they'd run out at about the same time. We of course ran them in pairs, two to a section that is...

I tried a bootlace but it didn't quite want the job...

Some C1 parts, do very occasionally come through, but usually as component parts of complete rifles. I once sold a really tatty mix and match deactivated L1A1 with what (I retrospectively realised) turned out to be a C1 TMH complete with the C1 butt. At the time I din't know what it was. The C1A1 stripping lever should have given it away, but I was only going down with the first symptoms of the Inch pattern collecting bug at the time and hadn't built up the knowledge!

The CA number had been ground from the right hand side and a Lithgowicon L1 number added to match the master number.

I would guess it was a TMH that was part of NATO pooled ordnance at one time, that must been sold off in Europe and someone built up an "Inch pattern" from parts and forced matched it .. Back in the 1990's there were lots Britishicon and Lithgow L1A1's floating about Europe, logic dictates there must have been one or two C1's among them.

The lower was held in the RQ's safe as an unserialized bare stripped item. They could appear in the giant workshop I guess...they didn't have any number though. The upper for us was the master component.

Similar for Britishicon Service. It was the Reciever that was THE Master component. You could get trigger mech housings if you indented for them. BUT....it was generally a back load to 2nd line workshops (Field) for a replacement T/Mech housing. Because THEY have the correct heavy duty engraving machines.
To number the T/Mech Housing to the master numbered recievers!

At unit, you only had. Elecro Pencils, or Vibro etchers available.
