Weaver TO-1

I am fitting a Weaver TO-1 rail onto an SMLE.

It is a new old stock item, came withthe screws loose in the bag and the shim for use on the SMLE was missing.

I measure around 60 thou when I mount the rail.But can somebody with this set up on their rifle measure the thickness of the shim for me, please?

I don't know anything about the mount but surely the best way to ascertain this is to centre the grat in the telescope and then shim the mount so that the grat is optically collimated with the mechanical axis of the bore. That is the only TRUE way in my opinion because the exterior dimensions of No1 rifles in relation to the bore are all over the place.

I know this from the difficulties encountered when they were trying to formulate machining jigs in order to convert No1 rifles to the current 'safe' DP spec.

Those mounts are only about $30, why not just get the correct item?

This actually the first scoped rifle that I am putting together for myself. I had some concerns over the hunting season with iron sights. I held off on a clear standing shot on a nice big doe because I couldn't acquire that front blade tip in my sight picture. Dark deer, dark background, dark sight blade invisible. I ended up painting the sight blade white with correction fluid out of the office desk. I am still ok using aperture sights for the range, butit is time to try out a scope or red dot on a hunting rig.

I did get the correct site rail kit (off 'that' auction site) but the packet was opened and missing the shim (very old stock, came in paper envelope packaging, not plastic).

Not a big deal as I am going to make the new shim and work it up to match the charger bridge height to get collimation as Peter describes. I wanted the provided (non provided) shim thickness as a starting point. But I have my vernier calipers in hand so I am good to go.

To think of all the loose TO-1 shims that I have seen kicking around in people's junk drawers over the years, and now that I want one....nobody seems to be able to find one for me! Murphy's law in action??

It just may take longer to get this info than it will to call Elwood Epps down the road and ship one. They may be able to help too...they're close after all. So is Collector Source in Acton.

I'd suggest a Pachmayer Lo-swing instead. Somewhat detachable and flips out of the way for loading or iron sights.
