    Lithgow Mod24 Restoration

    Hi guys

This is my lithgow mod 24 that i picked up for a hundred bucks a couple of years ago, and I'm finally in a position to clean her up. The barrel looks like a mud wasp biult a nest about halfway down but the last 5 inches or so looked allright, and it held a 20 cent sized group at 80 yards or with silly sights. I would say it shoots better as im not a steady hand and my eyes are not good (i have corrective lenses for my target rifles) and it was missing the screw from the barrel band at the time (what can i say, had to shoot the new toy)

It cam out of a deceased estate i believe, had been stored for many years and had developed surface rust and streaks that appeared to be mouse urine in the bluing. when i first got it i stripped the rust and blueing off with birchwood casey blue and rust remover, then oiled it and put it away for the next 3 or 4 years as work commitments and a baby got in the way. The stock had some gad awful red paint all over it and looked like it had been lacquered by dipping it on something as it had run marks all over it so i stripped it with Minwax and steel wool. Despite this i wasn't able to get all the red crap off (still some around the neck of the buttstock) and it seems to have stained the timber a red color which actually doesnt look too bad. The checkering (call it checkering is a bit overboard IMO) has been partly sanded away at some stage as well and needs repair. I BLOicon'd it and put it away as well.

The last thing i was searching for was the proper "Field Australiaicon" mount as it the action had the baseplate already installed for it, and i finally got one with all the screws

Now i have some time and all the parts it will be my project over summer when it warms up - as i can do this in air conditioned comfort =D
