1916 Russian Contract 1895 Winchester Musket

This si a 1916 Winchester 1895 Musket / Russianicon Contract Rifle, one of approx. 300,000 rifles Winchester delivered to the Czar between 1915-1916. This rifle was latter shipped to Spain during the SCW for use by the Republican Forces and has the Spanish MP8 flaming bomb Cartouche stamped on the buttstock.

The bluing is about 20% and the bore is dark but has good rifling. The butt stock has a spliced repair and what appears to be a rack number ( 10 ) stamped on it. The hand guard appears to be a replacement but by who or when is unknown. The action is crisp and it cycles dummy rounds nicely though I am still debating on how much range time, if any it will be receiving.[/b][/i][/color]

Thanks for sharing your 1916 Contract rifle; I also enjoy my 1916 Contract rifle posted earlier.

I can't see why not shoot it a bit. The ammo is available and will be the same as what it was fed in past years...just a few for interest' sake?

I would feed it better quality than the current surplus. Current surplus is also worse quality than what it was originally fed. 7.62x54r was originally brass cased, later on they moved to steel case primarily because it was used in MGs by that point in time.

If it was me I would reload some 7.62x54r, but next best thing would be a box or two of nice PPU ammo.

If it were me, I too would use a brass case cartridge. That's mostly because I loathe the steel case stuff. I said nothing because so many here worship the steel cases and their cheeeeap value, I didn't think it worth specifying...PPU would likely do fine.

Rumor Control has it that at least a few ended up in Cuba in the 1960's.
