A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Several of the WRA experimental barreled receivers turned up at the Stratford, CT. show in the Eighties... I remember two, both with no logo or serial number, one with a big X scratched in the heel. I turned them down because (a) the price was very high, (b) there was no documentation, and (c) zero chance of restoring it. Lots of odd WRA stuff showed up at Stratford, especially after Winchester sold off the museum collection.

I seem to remember reading somthing about a field expedient method for rendering an M-1 capable of full auto fire and seeing documentary footage of what appeared to be FA M-1 fire. Am I imagining this?

The hammer hooks are filed off and there she goes...never to be recovered. You have to change the hammer to sort it out.

No, that will not work as the hammer just follows the bolt forward and loses the ignition impetus as the bolt rotates into the locked position. The hammer needs to be held at full cock until the last closing movement of the bolt moves a lever that trips the sear, giving a full-power hammer drop and reliable ignition. Years ago (1970's) I did such conversions on Mini-14's and they worked well. That all became academic when Ruger introduced the AC556 which operated on the same principle.

Well, that's how they did them... No one said they were very effective or functional, they'd run and that was all. If it had been viable, they all would have been done.
