IHC M1D with no receiver leg engraving

Hi all,

I recently purchased an all IHC M1D less the barrel which is SA.
The receiver legs have no electro penciling as to who did the conversion. Is this something I should worry about?
The barrel caries the proper D731555 on the right side (haven't looked under handgaurd)
And is dated 58 or 53 can't tell.

I guess my question is, is this a proper depot build or an IHC with an M1D barrel home build?

Confirmed barrel date is 1953.
Serial puts the rifle production in 1954-56 range being 515xxxx

Not all M1D's were engraved on the receiver, many were not, the only one's I've seen that are, and I have one, are the late 60's Tooele M1Ds from the 1990's DCM Lottery sales. The early 50's Springfield Armory built M1Ds were not receiver marked that I'm aware of. You didn't say where you got the rifle, or if you have any documentation for it? The only way to know for sure if it's a US Army built sniper rifle is with documentation stating that, such as a letter of sale and provenance from the CMP that it was sold through the CMP/DCM. Otherwise I'd be cautious of it being a civilian built one, which may be worth the sum of it's parts, but has no USGI built sniper rifle collector value

Without valid provenance, there's no way to determine who did the conversion to M1D. Could have been an arsenal rebuild, a field conversion, or a "Bubba Built" in someone's garage. "Bubba" has built LOTS of M1Ds over the years--some on welded receivers. At a minimum, it's worth the value/cost of the parts--I hope you didn't overpay for it if it didn't come with papers.

All correct IHC except the 555 serial M1D barrel and SA M1D stock.

Nice looking rifle, never liked the prong flash hiders though...seemed like something that would hook up on things.

I too am not crazy about it, I'll see how it shoots with and without it and go from there.

You can send a request letter to the CMP Attention Serial Number Research, and for a fee of $25 they will check their sales records to see if your rifle was sold by the DCM/CMP as an M1D. No guarantee they'll find anything, but it's worth a shot, imo. Documentation adds real $$$ to collectible rifle value.
