Anyone have any information on these nine hole Mk5 Sten barrel nuts?



Were the missing three holes deemed unnecessary for cooling at some point?

There’s a boatload of them.

Looks about as rough as they get. I'll bet the holes were unnecessary and not a requirement.

No idea who made them. No markings that I can see.

It’s really in pretty good condition. A little surface rust around the threads, no pitting. The threads and ratchet teeth are in good shape. The striations look like they are intended to give a better grip.

If it helps, the cooling holes were drilled, not punched and the four marks at the back of the tube are indentations from pressing the tube onto the nut.

OK, because the outside looks like a really rough pass on a lathe with a dull chisel...I wonder if that was to clean off rust at one point?

Wait now, the Mk V had the pistol grip and a band up front so the center holes weren't required, were they? Could be Paki made...Peter will be along shortly I should think.

Very nice. I'm after one of those - or better still the 12 hole version. IIRC it's a production variation of the Mk2 barrel nut (for the MkV Sten), but over to Peter...

Just another production relaxation mentioned in the papers. Permitted because these were already pre-holed and assembled to the nut part to the PREVIOUS 6 hole spec. But to convert existing stock to the 12 hole spec, the second set of holes could be punched at the front, they couldn't be punched at the rear due to the fact that the nut part had been welded in place. Or something like that....... Quite common

PS. The finish looks bad but in reality it's no worse than zillions of others. As for the cooling properties of a Sten barrel nut, well..... It does work in both a radiating and convection way.......... sort of......... on a good day with a following wind and the tyres fully inflated and.......... You get my drift! Not as good as a Lanchester. This is a good practical and discussion subject for a physics class

As Peter has said I think these are later nuts, the earlier being the 12 hole type. I've seen quite a few of these nuts and the marks aren't from a large but from a linishing machine. I guess some one in the past had a lot of these surplus nuts and decided to linish the paint off. Maybe they were rusty or maybe they didnt like the sunc, who knows.
