Yes, there's always that rare piece of treasure eluding me, but I've no cause to complain all in all. I've picked up some real bargains myself over the years. And I agree with your comment where you stated that you've on occasions given someone a little more than they asked for as they clearly didn't know the value of what they had. The die hards might say that it's just tough luck on the seller for not knowing his subject, but I'd rather be able to deal with someone on an amicable ongoing basis than just make a killing out of them once.

One thing that helps a good deal as a buyer being fair and just about a price gets around the industry just a friendly chat there is always wiggle room on an item if you show respect it will be returned in kind, we all work hard for our money and our passion can sometimes lead us a tad astray in the quest to further our collections but if you remain amicable you will go far.
I once was at a fair 2 years ago and there was a Australianicon WWI Tiptaft slider hat badge for sale, the lady who had a good collection was trying to sell something to another buyer which I knew was a widows medal from WWII I was hoping they would put it down as I have been hunting one for a while but alas they got it for $25/AU bugger! But in among the sales pitch I inquired politely could I please look at the Tiptaft hat badge slider well bugger me what a response from her...."Well you know they are expensive don't you" I just shut my mouth and walked off $150.00 richer and thinking I know what they are worth lady and was going to buy it but stuff you.
She was there last year I looked at a pre WWI cadet hat badge again I know the prices of these but asked her as she was again serving some one so she grudgingly opened the cabinet and handed it to me it was nice I knew the price before she told me but the same reply "You know that is a $1000.oo badge." "Yes I know what they are worth thanks and handed it back" I just wanted to look closely at one".

I have family heirlooms in my safe so I do not really need to collect to much in the way of badges when I have these....

A few years ago i brought a Mk1 MLMCC of TradeMe for a buy now of $600, i did question the price telling him it was worth more but he insisted he wanted no more, as for the hooky, that was part of a small collection the shop had brought, would not surprise me if they had payed $200 for the lot so no guilt there

Well, you attempted to do the right thing with the private seller - you can only do so much.

That's the thing, never offered a low-ball price but got many a item cheap but also spent big, swings & roundabouts & karma can be a bitch!

Here are my 2 Mk1 Chargers (only photo I have at the mo) had been searching for 1 for years, was able to find these two within a few months of each other.
The P1903 is near mint, another cheap TM purchase

I had one of those too, about mint like that one. Guess I should have kept all the blades, but they still weren't worth much when I sold them...who'd have guessed? Had lots of those chargers too.
    Regards, Jim
