A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. The bolt knob mod is pretty different too. Considering the missing number, and remains of the previous one, perhaps an owner modified a spare bolt and the original never got refitted? Or one of those estates where the bolts were stored out of the rifles and the relatives/executor didn't know enough to mate them up again?

Interesting, except that there would be no space for an extra digit after the Broad Arrow or before the "C" unless space was deliberately left for it.
Some of the Mk.I.A scopes had the "A" added didn't they?
The REL 4 digit scope serial numbers are doubled serial number corrections.

I believe that this is the explanation for the discrepancy of 1588 sniping rifles recorded as accepted vs the 1524 scopes recorded as accepted.

I was tempted but all I needed was the spotting scope, not the rifle. And I could not work out the mental math on how much money I would have had in the scope if I had unloaded the rifle.

That should be "I don't get nuthin ™ " I got so little in ilfe I had to trademark that saying. But watching that poor rifle languishing there was killing me. The telescope and stand were the reason I eventually bought it, since I figured that the sale of those would pretty much cover the exchange rates/import fees. In the heyday, I recall one of those sets selling for about $3K USD (or almost 5K Cdn at the time). That was the heyday, I do not expect that now. I already have a scope and tripod, but needed the can. So I'll drag the extra scope and tripod to the Calgary show and see what happens.

As to the rifle, all I ever seem to see are the usual 90L snipers, which are technically post war. I currently have one of those, and also have a Britishicon made wartime 'T' that has the C/l\ on the wrist. Want to guess which one I prefer? Mind you, the 90L is incredibly accurate, despite being brought back to life from sporterization by an amateur like me.

This new sniper has the "been there" look to it. It appears to have a few issues like that bolt, but I can take care of that.

Had another forum member PM me that he was looking to buy a sniper on armslist, but it appears to be the same rifle I bought. Very likely a scammer unless the rifle has managed to replicate itself. Remember the old adage: too good to be true it possibly isn't.

Usually a good place to dispose of a bit of extra, or Kamloops...
