A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Look part way down the column and you'll find the mark on the receiver tail of a Bavarian Carbine. Marking means HE-J.P. (Hessen Landjägerei Polizei)

    German Police

Gunsdora, any chance your stock has numbers stamped in the barrel channel like the one in Jim's link?

Here is another stock with JP stamp plus #'s. No #'s in the sling well but has 7 #'s stamp on the left side . The other stock on the top has no #'s on the left side. This is getting more confusing all the time.

Keep in mind that many of those Bavarians were transferred from one police dept. to another. Some will have two or even three sets of markings.
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!
