While we were apprentices, tools, micrometer etc left on the lathe bed was a hanging offence only bettered - or just slightly behind leaving a chuck key in the chuck. Even if the lathe was switched off at the switch or even at the local power station that meant having your marriage tackle put in the vice and then you were hanged afterwards.

I remember years ago someone left a chuck key in a lathe, someone turned the lathe on and the key managed to spin out of the chuck and hit my foot. Everyone thought it highly amusing except me because it bloody hurt. Before anyone asks it wasn't me that left the key in the chuck or turned the lathe on but my foot did receive collateral damage.

[QUOTE=Luis Bren;399967]This is my other vintage lathe. An Argentineicon South Bend 9 copy.

My first lathe was very similar. It was a Hercus which is an Australianicon South Bend copy. I have a Colchester Student these days, 1 metre between centres. I built my first semi-auto pistol as a teenager on a friends Myford Super 7 with a milling slide attached. It took about 6 months but it worked well - pretty much a copy of the High Standard Duramatic and based on an exploded drawing from a Gun Digest. Don't tell the politicians or they will ban illustrations!

Warren, as we all know, in the mind of a politician there are three types of undesirables; those who own firearms, those who can think for themselves and know how to make things, and worst of all, owners of 3D printers! Not only can they print out weapons of mass destruction, but also the multi-engine bombers to carry them! What a pack of paranoid plonkers!

I use 3D printed PLA patterns to investment cast aluminium radiator parts for my Lewis repros. Very handy gizmos!

Luis, has your vintage lathe in post 43 got taper bronze bearings which are adjustable with screwed rings?

That's handy, Luis, because it allows you to take up wear in the bearing by loosening off the ring on one side and tightening up the other ring. I do still use a similar lathe for odds and ends, from time to time, and more modern lathes for everyday/precision work. With the old bronze bearings I normally apply a few drops of oil to the bearing oilers every time I use the lathe.
