also an interest in the containers

There has been an interest among military collectors for the wooden containers for different items of ordnance. I remember looking at 81mm wooden boxes used to transport these shells, now most of these items are goneAttachment 81600Attachment 81601Attachment 81602

Without anything to compare to...I THINK that's the round we called the Swedishicon "J" round. It was half the length and just as effective. Same construction and bursting arrangement but the base might not be as simple as the one you already restored...might look different. A side-by-side comparison might help me remember...

The 84 Illum!!! Yes, I was thinking 81mm. The 84 had an illum rd but we never had it. Yes, that's what it is...I don't know what the back end will look like, it goes into one of those black casings. You do have one? Yes, the Carl Gustav...is rifled. Black aluminum casing...I doubt there was anything at the back but maybe a cap. Looks like this...

    Thanks Jim.

I don't have that kind of collection, but they do appear. Now I'll keep an eye open. They weigh nothing and should ship easily, when and if it appears...watch and shoot!

I have vivid memories of seeing those 84mm Illum. rounds fired.

Barrel of the Carl Gustav pointed nearly straight up.

Loader cuddled up to the gunner. (Both wearing serious ear-muffs OVER the foam plugs in their ears).

HUGE ball of flame that engulfed the gun crew at launch, and kicked up a LOT more dust than firing them more-or-less horizontally. (They obviously don't do "dust" in Swedenicon........)
