    Dedicated .22 upper

Who makes a good dedicated .22 upper? It would be used as an economical way to practice for service rifle Competition?

    Archer:

Compass Lake is the way to go, IF money is no object. Others make 'em, I'm not sure if White Oak does or not, but you sure couldn't go wrong with a White Oak, if they do.

Yes, a dedicated 22 LR upper is one of the best, and most economical ways to practice for Service Rifle competition. They are fantastic for offhand, and are great for working on your position in sitting rapid. I presonally don't know how much good they do in prone, but that's where I have the least problems.......

You will save money, time and barrel wear, they are a great HP asset, assuming that you can find a quality 22 LR round these days.....

    Smile Dedicated .22 upper

You might give "Accuracy Speaks" a call. They are in Mesa, Arizona. I have a dedicated .22 upper that they built for me over 4 years ago. It has always worked perfectly and it is a tack driver. It has paid for itself in ammunition savings. Back then, everyone wanted the A2, M4, flat top, SOPMOD, SPECFOR style. I am sure that Accuracy Speaks (Jim), thought I was nuts when I asked for an upper that exactly matched my early SP-1. However, they did an excellent job, beaver tail handguards and all. They even installed a Colt SP-1 slickside upper receiver. The color is a perfect match for my lower. Every part on that .22 upper looked factory new. The only clue that the .22 upper is installed - the Douglas Premium Barrel is bigger in diameter than the .223 barrel. Except for that, both uppers look alike. Just what I wanted. They can build a dedicated upper to fit any of the available adapters(M261, Colt, Ceiner, Air Force, MAC ). I highly recommend Accuracy Speaks. Good luck in your quest. Regards, Johnny Lawson

i have a frank white, compass lake upper, set up as a 3-way. this is a detachable carry handle (w/match sights) upper, detachable frt sight, 20" bbl., floating hand guard. i shoot in a 100 yrd .22 league as practice for my hi-power prone shooting. it shoots w/most of the boys w/bolt rifles and iron sights. mid to upper 190's. btw, second way is to take off the sights, chg out the stock and you can use it as a scoped match rifle (or chg the rear sights to micrometer match and put on the bloop tube front sight setup. third way is to take everything off and install a 6x scope and go squirrel hunting! three guns in one, and cheap to shoot to boot.

I bought the barrel, M261 CLE modified bolt, two mag inserts and CLE front sight base for just over $600. It is the cheapest way to go for a dedicated 22upper. You can buy the whole thing from CLE for around $1100 if you do not have a donor upper with a float tube. These are superior to the Ciener kits that use the original barrel and 223 chamber. I know it is spendy but it is worth every penny.

WoW! Why does a 22 upper cost as much as my complete NM rifle?

Try to price the individual components you would need to build a NM upper. Including float tube, NM barrel nut, delta ring, handgurds, and 1/4 X 1/4 rear sight. Then add a Douglas blank, labor to machine, chamber, and assemble. Then add the cost of the M261 kit with mag inserts. I think you will find that you cannot beat the price.
I built mine from a RRA that needed a new barrel. I bought the RRA for $850
two years ago. Add $630 for the 22 parts = $1480 with a barrel and bolt left over. Asuming that NM upper with worn out barrel goes for around $500, add $630 = $1130, right in line with the cost of a new .22 upper from CLE complete. There aint no way around it unless you can manufacture the parts you need. You end up with a NM AR-15 in 22 RF, not a 22 adaptation.
Like I said...worth every penny. Get one. You will have to compete against those that did. LOL

For HP practice, I shoot mine at 100 yrds on a SR-1 , and MR-31C . They are the reduced 200 yrd, and 600 yrd targets for 100 yrds. I also shoot my CLE at NRA smallbore silhouettes at 40m, 60m, 77m, 100m, and plan to use it in my long range silhouette matches at 80m, 120m, 154m, and 200 yrds. It is as acurate as my Win.52B heavy, HR-M12, 40X, or Kimber 82G.
As soon as the weather gets nice, I will be making a short Youtube movie to demonstrate the small bore long range silhouette concept. Basically it is SB silhouettes at twice the normal distances, sitting for chicken and pigs, and prone for the turkey, rams. The rifle must be supported by the shooter without artificial support. The use of a sling is allowed and encouraged, as are spotting scopes, and coaching from the scorer. I am excited about getting this off the ground and hope to get many dedicated shooters involved.
