I have the same problem with a 38 in 7,35. Outside as unissued, the rifling gone. Probably some stupid tried to make a .308 fit and drilled away the rifling.
Everytime I think of it I get the tears........

The rifling in mine is very strong. They just left it to sit and rust in there. It was bought as a wallhanger so I don't have much into it but it would be nice to get it operable again. I have probably 3/4's of the rust that was originally in it out but there's enough left to give me concerns. I expect a couple of shots and it would clear it all out of there but if there's too much, I could ring or bulge the barrel.

I have Privi cartridges. I believe I heard they are a bit on the small size. Not really my safety, I assure you this is going to be in a lead sled and I'm going to be 20 feet behind it behind a 2' round tree. I'm just concerned about the rifle, and maybe the sled. It is a nice sled.

Short of electrolysis cleaning KROIL has been my best rust removal treatment.
I have used evapo rust and rust release super gel in some nasty bores.... I try not to use them as it will take blue off also. My guns are not pretty but a chemical stain where you don't want it looks awful.

Now if your worried about pressure load up some reduced loads with trail boss or H4895.
I run cast bullets in mine at about 1300-1500fps.

I'm gearing up to find a rifle and load that will be best for a CMP vintage match. Already have some few golds with cast loads on the 1903a3

Just get a stainless steel bore brush and oil and get to work...we're reinventing the wheel here. When that brush wears out get another...it'll come clean(ish). Don't worry about the steel brush scratching the fine polish of your barrel either... Then when it's decent shoot it.

i have also rubbed fine labbing compound into my cast bullets and shot about 20 rounds it does improve some crusty bores....I have found all but the worst bores still shoot ok so i dont get to crazy with them.....good scrub and a little kroil

I've listened to some of that with valve grinding compound and lapping compound... I'd just get several stainless brushes and oil. Start wearing them out and use lots of oil. Rinse them with Varsol regularly to see...

I think getting the bores as clean as possible really helps if your going to try and shoot it.

Did a test run of 12 rounds of 200 grain cast bullets.

That's what we were suggesting...
