Can you guess what it is yet?

Can anyone tell me what rifle goes in this chest.

I'm sure someone out there will know but if not I'll let you know tomorrow.

I'm positively drooling! Got a specimen of the rifle but never even had so much as a sniff of a chest!

To all intents and purpose Roger it's a No4(T) chest with slightly modified internals.

An Irish job I take it. Which scope fitted? Or is it just the chest?

Might be worth carefully steel-wooling those slops of paint to see what they were covering up.

I wonder what would have caused all those bumps and dents on the inside of the lid? The scope was the highest point above the receiver...

These were on issue as late as 1944 IIRC. Tom Barker who wrote about his experiences on Crete as an ad hoc sniper was issued one of these Alex Martin rifles on his way there.
“There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”

    Edward Bernays, 1928

Much changes, much remains the same.
