Well, I had strayed away from using my 50s rebuilt, 6 digit Inland as my home/ranch defense carbine. I was using either an AR or Kel-Tec SU-16 loaded with MK262 MOD1 77 grain ammo. While very good for coyote busting, I have concerns about over penetration, now that there is a house going in close to the property line.
Thus, I have decided to switch back to the trusty old M1 Carbine, loaded with Hornady Critical Defense ammo. Critical defense tops USGI ammo by about 100 fps, and feeds flawlessly through my carbine because of the FMJ shape of the projectile with its FTX polymer plug in the HP cavity.
After all, the Carbine served my dad well on Iwo Jima, and me well as an LEO trunk weapon before it became an "AR-world."
My furthest coyote shot possible on the property is just a tidge over 100 yards. Since my current M1 carbine is dead nuts on at 100, and I have whacked Blacktail deer in the past at 100 yards, VERY successfully with the Carbine, I think it will do well. Besides, the M1 carbine is a lot more fun to shoot!

Over penetration of any 5.56/.223 with regard to structures is a very valid concern with your scope of use, I think the .30 Carbine is likely a much better choice with regards to that.

Just remember....heaven forbid....that if you do ever have to use it to defend yourself you are not going to see that gun again in a very VERY long time.....possibly ever.

True, but in California, (under our draconian laws) it is still replaceable. The ability to replace ARs and AKs had the door slammed closed on 1-1-2017!
I wish you would make your mind up already like the rest of us.
My problem is I like retro AR15 carbines almost as much as M1 carbines! This one is 100% Colt, except the stripped Nodak Spud 601 "slick side" lower. The barrel is a NOS Colt 6420, 1/7" twist 16" pencil barrel.

Having several is just as good I think. I'd have an Carbine around for defense if we didn't have a mag capacity law, and we were allowed to defend ourselves...here we could end up political again...
