1903a4 receiver tearing up tap...

I know a lot of the drill rifle 1903 and 1903A3 receivers had the cut-off area welded-up too, This would apply excess heat to the rear area, do not know if your receiver was involved.

I have also heard of restored 1903 drill rifles having headspace problems after a few thousand rounds, which should not happen

Having worked on over 50 M1903A3 Springfield rifles over the years (since 1972) as a gunsmith I have found that the rear part of the receivers have a very hard surface. This hard surface is a common feature more to the Remington made actions then the Smith Corona ones. Most of the drilling and tapping that I performed on the M1903A3 as a gunsmith involved scope mounts and Redfield match rear sights and bases. The ordinary carbon steel taps will not work even if you drill the starter hole with a tungsten carbide drill bit. You have to use a tungsten carbide tap to thread the hole or holes. The receiver being from a drill rifle should be tested to ensure it will come apart on you.

One would like to think #14 that if the issue was resolved let the forum know how it was resolved for future reference if another case happens again with this issue also that if in the resolution of your issue was because you received advice from one of the members here that due recognition is given to the people here as there is no where else that I know of in E-Land where you will receive the technical guidance from the armourers & gunsmiths here, all free of charge as I bet the gunsmith did not miss you mine certainly doesn't........

You had a gunsmith with the receiver in hand and he couldn't sort it. You come here and ask us without even a picture to tell you how to fix it...not just one thread but two. You get what you pay for. We have no idea if anything is resolved, or more likely you're too embarrassed to say. Either way, doesn't matter.

My guy contacted his uncle who is also a gunsmith and has alot more experience with old and milsurp rifles than he does. The rear of the rifle was just harder than he was used to but evidently not unusual for Remington receivers. He got a carbide bit and tapped it fine.
