1903 Stock Relief
Could anyone shed some light on this stock. The bolt handle root doesn't come anywhere near not being able to close completely. Was this added later by someone else? Thanks for the reply.Attachment 82402

It looks like it was done by machinery but I don't know how they would have held the stock to keep it that clean. Its pretty old I think, could have been done overseas? Thanks for looking.

I've seen that on several M1903s - someone "authoritative" had an explanation once, but I've forgotten what it was!!

this is a USMC cut,, stock was in the hands of the USMC at some point,
done to clear the new replacement bolts at the time.

Even the N.S. had a slight crescent swell on the underside of the handle that commonly hit the stock.

Thanks for the replies, The same stock has a script proof mark on the wrist and a script R on the nose and seems a little more trim behind the receiver than some of the other ones I have. Its my favorite one but I always wondered about it.
