    The Golden Bullet

After a hiatus of over 2 years (Army closed the range due to safety issues with the Butts) our club was finally able to hold the Golden Bullet a long range competition based over 2 days over 3 ranges 700, 800 & 900M.

It was hot on both days the Sunday being rather more so as my last detail was at 11:30am and I boiled.
Classes were Target Rifle, F Open, F Standard, FTR there were 59 entries F Standard was broken into A - B grades from a persons o/all scores on record my wife was in B grade.
In F Open there was just that no A-B there was some stiff comp here with State and Australianicon F class shooters competing we even had a ring in from Victoria I competed in this grade.

Courses of fire at 700M 1 x 10 scoring 2 sighters followed by a 15 scoring 2 sighter at this range the conditions were very bad mirage in-fact no one shot on the wind flags it was mirage all the way. It was here I plonked in a 60.05 the only possible on this meterage and the first possible in the competition.
800M was a 10 shotter plus sighters 1 x 15 shotter plus sighters I had a train wreck on my 15 shotter with a fishtail mirage where it swirled on you rapidly then straightened again.
900M was shot on Sunday 1 x 10 & 2 x 15's and there were only 2 possibles shot out of the whole field such was the mirage I used up 18 of my 22 minutes waiting out the mirage on the last 15 shotter. But had to give it up as I initially shot on a L-R mirage and had 10 in the 6 ring with 3X then it went R-L and did not switch back I dropped 5.
The mirage was so intense I had the March backed to 30X normally I would have it at 50 or 60X at 900m but at that mag the lines looked like the waves on the ocean and the 6 ring was all over the place.

I shot for the weekend 105 rounds my wife 97 so she is a bit more conservative on ammo getting her sighter's scoring

Badges & prizes were given for the first 5 placings in each division.

Anyway the shoot was a great success my wife finished in 2nd place in F Std B grade using her now infamous Moogun (Painted up like a Fresian cow with an art deco hand painted cow motif) Barnard action, .308 Kreiger match grade barrel 15-55 x 52 NXS Comp, custom stock.
Load 155.5gn Berger 44.6gns AR 8208 Lap case (Palmer) BR-4 primer 20 thou jump.

Myself finished 5th in the F Open division over 25 shooters in this division I was using my 6.5 x 284 Savage F class LLRE, custom stock, HART barrel 1-8TR 30" March 8-80 x 56 LTM 4 Ret. Load 136gn Lapua "L" Scenna, 49.5gn AR 2209, Lap case, Fed - 210 Match 10 thou jump

I was surprised considering who was there competing as on the Sunday shooting it was like lying below a blow torch whilst waiting on that mirage.
I am having a little bit of success of late taking out the state shoot at the SASR range in Perth in Nov '16 with "As issued" with my No.1 shooter No.4 also won the 600yd Tactical class at the same shoot using my .308 APRS it has been a long time coming.
After 45 years plugging away a little win every now and then does ones confidence and belief in their ability the world of good.

Well done! Sounds like a complicated weekend with the mirage conditions.
I'll be shooting our first Service Rifle competition on Saturday; but these are at 200 metres.
I'll be using the No1 MkIII* in the modified class (AG Parker rear sight) and the No4 Mk1/2 for the standard class.
Only shot 200 metres once since the National final last year so should be interesting.

30Three ~ good luck with the 200 mtr event one thing I always do is use sight black on the front sight & ears and top wood end cap & rear sights (I do cover the yardage figures though) not a real problem if using a 5C or similar hopefully it goes well for you.

scoobsean ~ 27 k's South from us infact Capel is well located 26 k's to Bunbury, 22 K's to Donnybrook and 10 k';s from the fishing/swimming beach we go to infact the whole shire only has about 9 thousand people we have lived here for 25 years and it still has the small country town about it.
