Bren Bipod Clips- reproduction.

I noticed these Bren bipod clips for sale on eBay recently and wondered if they were something that was ever used with the Bren, back in the day, when in service? I would be interested to hear any members thoughts, please.

Yes, definitely used with the Bren but declared obsolete very soon too! Not bipod leg grips per-se but used on ONE leg when bipod was folded forwards and clip went over the barrel. Mainly used on AFV's etc etc but stand to be corrected for minor errors.......

From the bowels of "the shed" a partial box of NOS Bren bipod clips.
All the pictures I have ever seen of them used and most were on AFV's were both legs forward towards the muzzle with the clip attaching to one leg to the barrel and the other position with clipped to one leg the other hook swung up to hold the other bipod leg. I had a photo of one on a Bren mounted on an AFV somewhere but will just pop one on a bipod for illustration of both types of usage I have seen.

The part number of LV4/ is interesting as this confirms that the clip is from the LIGHT VEHICLES stores category as opposed to the B1 or C3 rifles/machine guns categories we usually see. This indicates that the part was vehicle related. While you could clamp both legs together I suppose, it'd defeat the object rather because the geometry of the bipod already closes the feet up. What was a 'problem' was the bipod dropping down, even when running with the gun. When it was on an AFV mount over rough ground it would have been worse.

Peter, sometimes I've seen "F.V." followed by a number on parts such as vehicle lamps and other parts etc, etc. It was my understanding that "F.V." stands for "Fighting Vehicle" but I have not seen confirmation of this. Do you happen to know if "F.V." stands for "Fighting Vehicle" or for something else, please?

Yep, FV = Fighting Vehicle BUT it usually refers to a part that is a non standard commercial fitting. Such as Military spec Land Rover lights and Bedford RL cab fittings as opposed to the usual commercial Lucas stuff to a standard L/R or Bedford etc etc lorry

I've the DD(E) 2109 and Introduction LoC from 1938 here if some one wants to make one or put them up (my photobucket is playing up but I can email them to anyone ), I vaguely remember its very similar to a clip on a lewis pipod but that was closed by a rivet around one leg and the large end clipped onto the other leg rather than the barrel.

In your HUGE trove of info do you have any info on a single gun chest for a STEN?
To the best of my knowledge there was never one made for a single STEN but I have seen a chest for two and ten.

I have a sten shipping chest that holds twenty. There used to be quite a number of these at the local mil-scrapyard, but they have pretty well returned to the earth now.

Still waiting on the D.D. ( E). Disc but it's a long way from NZ to here and I'm in no hurry. Just want them so I can pass copies on to those who need them, I'm pretty much out of researching and collecting.

Nothing on Sten Chests I'm afraid. Had I seen any I'm pretty sure I would have copied them.

Nah, I don't think I'll be getting to any fairs this year, more into earlier periods now, more my level of technology! I keep threatening to get a black powder licence etc and get something that actually goes bang.
