Looking for info on original ar10's

I had one of the Sudanese models with the semi-auto Sendra receiver in the early 1990's. The bore condition wasn't great. We range tested it with a new HK91 a friend had at the time and it was not only more accurate but much more comfortable to shoot.

That's only the second time I've heard that suggested. Last time I mentioned that I was shouted down as a heretic. I always felt these shot like they were on the far edge of the time pressure curve and were about to come apart...then I shot the M14 and FN C1... Personal opinion only, others mileage may vary...

As I understood they built a fair few more than 1200, but under 10,000 (dutch AR10's). The Sudanese contract was around 2500 and the Portugeuse around 5000 then there were a few other smaller contracts, Italian Navy was one I believe. As previously posted quite a few made it down here to OZ, converted to Semi by grinding the auto sear hook off the hammer, removing the auto sear and pin, and welding up part of the selector barrel so it wouldn't spin around to the auto position. They also XXXX out the 'AUTO' marking on the lower receiver. Seems most where also painted black and I've only ever seen one in the original brown. As a dealer I've had hands on a few out here over the years, mainly the Sudanese versions but the odd Portuguese one as well. A few years back I knew of a few still in service with Chopper shooters up in the NT, but I reckon they would have had to have worn them out by now. In my experience they are not bad to shoot but I wouldn't sell a L1A1 to buy one given the choice.

Having grown up with Lee Enfields and graduated to L1A1s, the AR-10 was a revelation.

Really handy and a hoot in the bush; you just had to be a bit careful with the aluminium magazines. Did not miss the "rock 'n' roll feature at all. Not much fun (or point) on an L1A1, even less on something as light as an AR-10, especially the "Sudanese" version; "straight-line" layout or not.
