SMLE No.1MKV missing front band and backsight slider.

EFD had said they could provide me with a replacement slider for the Mk5 leaf (which I have). I waited for years without result ... so in order to be able to shoot it, I fitted a No. 4 backsight. Without, of course, making any irreversible alteration to the rifle! It might looks a bit odd to an Enfield expert, or even ghastly to a serious collector, but it works.

So if anyone out there has a MkV backsight, this could be an opportunity to complete it with the rest of the rifle.

Seriously, what kind of value does it have, considering that a MkV backsight is what J. Moore would call absolute unobtainium?

Its not so much the value Patrick, but I come up with the theory that many get destroyed due to folk trying to remove the axis pins without removing the very small hardly visable reataining pins, the big mistake is that the axis pins have a slot for a screwdriver that indicates to most it screws out, its not the case this just enabales it to turn so the retaining pin hole lines up with the sight ladder........

I do have a slider( but but no ladder) the retaining spring is missing or need replacing, PM me if interested.

I'm sure you're right. I was also puzzled at first, but managed to stop myself using brute force and FUBARing the fixing pins.

After some delays due to asynchronous holidays etc, I received the backsight slider for a very modest price from bigduke6 and have now installed it. The MkV now looks a lot more convincing:

    - but for anyone who also has the problem of a MkV without a backsight, here's how you can attach a No.4 backsight, without making irreversible alterations to the Mk.V.

Just a temporary fudge of course, but in my case "temporary" was 8 years! Note the spring between the left lug and the No.4 backsight, to hold the sight over to the right.

3 (at least) cheers for these forums, and many, many thanks to Geoff for his help!
