Current value of artillery spotting rifle

Curious as to the rough value of a type 38 Nagoya spotting rifle. Partially ground mum, otherwise in good condition. Bolt not with rifle. I saw one sold on gunbroker for $1200 but it had the mum.

Only one on Gunbroker, hoped to find something else there, $1100, not $1200. I have an opportunity to buy one for $475, just seems like an awful lot for a hole in the stock. I know they are uncommon.

I checked this out again and decided to pass on it. The rifle is in good general condition with a very nice bore but the bolt is not original and doesn't even match itself. It is also polished and has the look of having been polished because of pitting/rust. The safety knob is still blued so it is probably a third part not original to the bolt. This was pretty much the final decision maker. I figured if the bolt matched I'd go ahead with it. It had a problem with the stock also which made the decision even easier. It was busted out on the one side next to the stock bolt hole. I know it's a rare type but I also know I'd never be happy with it.

good decision. they aren't that rare...i think i have owned 3 or 4 of them

I hate taking risks which is why I asked. Not enough of them out there to get a feel for them from past sales. A lot of guys said they got them cheap because no one knows what they are and I can fully understand that. It's just another Arisaka with a hole in the stock.

This is the first time I've heard of these. So how do you tell if a type 38 is a artillery spotting rifle and how were these used?
