New purchase poss carbine. SRS check please.

Bought what may be a real carbine from a local gun shop. 1898 date receiverm original carbine stock, missing saddle ring but screws to mount ring still in place. Serial number 273823. Did I get lucky, or is it another cut down rifle? Thavks

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. A rifle according to the number. The only carbine the book shows is down in the 268XXX. That is only one for miles either side. Pics might help though.

That number is pretty far above the accepted range for M1898 carbines. According to SRS records, the range is between 117,000 and 133,000. Anything outside the range should be subject to close scrutiny.
