    Good'ay,

Your L42A1 rifle serial number M36982 was batch number 4 of a total batch size of 22 sent to Donnington building 69/671 on the 4th January 1971.

    Hi Gil,

Thank you for the rapid reply. My L42A1 would seem to have an interesting history. It is one of the 12 L42A1's that came to Australia in the 1970's for Australianicon Army trials, which didn't appear to have happened. Further, Rifle No M36982 is mentioned on page 141 of Steve Houghton's excellent book "The Britishicon Sniper: A Century of Evolution" as not being delivered straight to the MoD from RSAF Enfield but to the Metropolitan Police for trails and evaluation in late 1970. Interesting the delivery date to Donnington was the 4th January 1971.

Could it have been one of the XL42 rifles which was converted to L42A1 standard and reshipped after trials?

Yes more than likely. I was hoping Maca079 might be able to find out a bit more from the seller.

    Hi Gil,

The markings on the rifle action are standard L42A1 with what I can determine no evidence of XL42 markings or removal of such. It does have an F.T.R stamp just under the TR stamp on the wrist, from it's previous No4 T life maybe? I have asked the previous owner for any more information on the rifles history. I'll let you know if I learn any more.

    AngusMcRat,

Your Enfield Enforcer serial number 036 was a rifle held by Avon & Somerset Police obtained on the 10th February 1982, bought the same day as 035. Acquisition Order number 16200.
    Hope that helps
    Gil
