    MOSSBERG 144 Markings "SSR"??

I just bought an old model 144 Mossberg .22 rifle and on the right side forearm of the stock just back from the front end is stamped into the wood (with metal lettering stamps ) are 3 letters; SSR or maybe SSB. I can't be sure about that last letter.
Any significance to those letters? Armorer's initials? Someone's initials? Military marking of some sort?
