    George Gibbs .577 P56?

I have just obtained a very tidy .577 rifle by George Gibbs, 29 Corn Street, Bristol. It is essentially a P56 but has a wedge fastened fore-end instead of barrel bands. I assume it was made as a Volunteer rifle but I would like to know more if anyone can enlighten me. The woodwork is very good with a nice finish and the barrel has some original blue fading to brown. The bore is as perfect as I have ever seen on a rifle of this age, bright and sharp rifling right to the muzzle. The number 270 is engraved on the butt plate tang.

What a splendid-looking rifle. I think you will find a lot of expertise on this and similar types at the following address

British Flint and Percussion Arms Forum

which is also probably the best place to make contact with other percussion rifle shooters in NZicon.
