Where did you order the tap from? britishfastners.com has the 1/4 26 for $7.26.

They are located in New York.

So it sounds like you were looking for a 1/4" BSF or a 1/4" Britishicon Standard Brass tap which are identical taps and both 26t.p.i..

Being a onetime, low impact use tool I searched the cheapest option, anything out of the states was too expensive in shipping so I ordered one off eBay with free shipping.
Turns out the cost is in the wait...

If you look on eBay U.K. I wouldn't have thought that you would have too much trouble finding BSF or BSW taps and dies. Obviously there is the shipping charges/taxes to consider. I was using BSF screws and threads for toolmaking and engineering purposes until the early 1990's when I switched to metric threads. I don't recall any difficulty getting the imperial screws but the metric screws were cheaper.

What they sent is a common 1/4 Unified/UNF thread on UKicon made MG's Triumphs, Nortons, BMC's etc etc. Just keep it and sell it on to one of them. And while you're there, just ask one of the old bikers if he has a 1/4 BSF you can borrow. That's what I'd do anyway.........

I don't think that it is 1/4 UNF because this size thread has a finer pitch to 1/4 BSF. From the chart you can see that 1/4 UNF has a pitch of 28 t.p.i.. I don't know what they have sent you but it is not a standard 1/4" UNF, UNC, BSW, or BSF with that size of pitch.

As Peter has indicated, you never hear people in the U.K. asking for a 1/4" X 26 tap because most people won't know what the hell you are talking about. If you say that you want a 1/4 BSF tap they will know exactly what you are talking about.
