Some of these people don't understand you mean "Gun" stuff...I ran into that in an Ackland Grainger shop a while back. They kept trying to correct me until one guy asked if it was "Gun"...? Then they didn't want to talk to me. I deal with Brownells now...

The op is trying to obtain a 1/4 BSF tap, Jim, and I am doing my best to help him. The incorrect one that has been sent to him has been incorrectly identified as 1/4 UNF when it is not. It is not very helpful to him if he carries on thinking that it is something that it is not. You are hardly the person to criticise others for correcting fellow forum members.

I would go with PL's suggestion look at any old car restorers or classic English M/cycles Norton/Triumph and see if they have the required tap as it is only going to be a 1 of use but I would treat it with extreme caution and don't snap it off these people that own old cars like Austin Healy's & M.G's or Norton bikes are known to be very tweaky!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got my 24 - 26 - and 28 TPI threads mixed up but you want a BSF and someone local with an old Brit car or bike WILL have one. You can't survive without such stuff. I still have some Whitworths!

But does anyone know what standard thread size, the 1/4 x 24 tpi, is that John172 got sent in error? I don't recognise it as a commonly used thread here in the U.K. but it could be a non standard pitch size.

Military vehicle owners are the worst......... John if you still have had no luck I think I've a few spares , I buy boxes and bits off car boot sales so sometimes have a few extra, I'm in the workshop today doing a bit on my Matchless and a few other jobs.......so will have a look

Out of interest, what's the thread system on the Matchless? BS-Whitworth? The Centurion is/was the worst offender. BSW and BSF and then then UNC and UNF........ except when it wasn't convenient! Radios and instruments, yep...... BA! Agricultural dealers are a good source of nuts, bolts etc as they still cater for some old stuff on the farms

BSF and the cycle thread BSC/BSCy (60 degree thread angle) mine going throughout service life has had a few changes here and there, UNC and UNF and a few metric thrown in for good luck.
On the subject of threads I'm just looking at suppliers of imperial threaded bar in stainless to make my own crancase bolts etc.
