A friend of mine had a FAL, one of the metric guns from Israel. It had been converted to SA and he knew a armorer in the Canadian Army that had the parts to convert it back to FA. The guy sent him the parts, guess they got them when they first tested the gun and they were metric. Sold it decades ago, no idea where it is now, long before registration so it has literally vanished.

Those parts seemed to interchange. It's things like barrel threads that are different...for instance.

I believe you can change out the trigger, hammer and safety from a Metric TMH to an Inch pattern and it works just fine.

Stands to reason the selective fire safety will work too with a shortened trigger plunger, plus I assume, the Israeli Fal still had its Safety sear?

The FAL I covet is one of the 5,000 or so built for Venezuela in 7x49. As a fan of the 7x57 cartridge, and owning an FN49, I can only imagine combining the ballistics of a 7mm, 140 grain bullet at 2750 fps and the ergonomics of the FAL. Still convinced that's the combination NATO should have adopted except for the pernicious double dealing of the US Ordnance Department.

I know where there is a full 1000rd case of .280/30 and a box or two of FN 7x49 Venezuelan contract ammo.


From what I understand, all the Venezuelan LARs were all rebuilt c.1960 with G1 type 7.62 barrels and low sights.

the closest current cartridge to 7x49 is 7mm08 which seems to be the "golden fleece" in commercial M1A & FN-FALs.

I understand that Springfield did a run of 7mm08 M1As in the late 80s/early 90s

I've recommended it to several people as a hunting cartridge instead of .308w and they have loved it.
