    $700 a good price for a type 38?

    Hello all,

Im currently speaking to guy about buying his grandpa's Type 38. Hes asking $700. Heres some things about it:

    - It comes with an original Bayonet and Bayonet Frog as well as an original muzzle cover

    -Numbers dont match

-comes with an original nonmatching dust cover

    -There is noticeable surface rust/Patina

    -Mum is intact

    Is this worth $700?

Heck no. He's putting emotional value into it that's for sure. On the best day describing what you have the rifle by itself being a mismatch would be between $200 and $250. If the muzzle cover is original add $100-$150. The nonmatching dust cover is another $100 and the bayonet with frog is about $100. I would try and talk him down if you're that interested in it.

Burb1989 has got it right. The whole is NOT worth more than the sum of the non-matching parts.

Dust covers for 38's are closer to $40-$50. 99's are about $100. Numbers may be assembly numbers which in early 38's will not match the serial number.

Agree $700 way too high. 38's not anywhere near as popular these days as 99's.
