Their theory was that the bayonet was always fixed when we were shooting as we were supposed to be at war...so the bayonet was fixed...around in a circle...

The bayonets were available in quantity during the '70s from Epps surplus in Winnipeg, wish I'd grabbed some then. They were cheap and both variants were there. All were in the grease...
    Regards, Jim

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. So through a joint effort from a couple of forum members, I now have the optic coming for the top of my EX2. Warren sent me an email showing an EX2 top cover, optic, and dust cover were coming up for auction at an auction house in Richmond, BC.. I registered to bid online, and while waiting for approval. Colin ( Seaforth72) contacted me asking about the differences between an EX1 and an EX2. Suspecting he had seen the auction, I confirmed with him that he had, and informed him that I was prepared to enter the realm of stupidity to get that item, as my rifle needed it. He volunteered to attend the auction and do the bidding for me. He even called me 3 or 4 minutes before it came up so I could live vicariously through the bidding.

The bidding was over in very short order, and I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the item. He sent me a photo of it laying in the snow outside the auction house, claiming to be acclimatizing it for it's new life in Shilo. For those not from Canadaicon, BC rarely drops below zero, while here in Shilo we have been dealing with constant -35 temps for the last while.

Of course, the hunt is not quite over. This cover is missing the rear steel aperture sight. Also, I think I am going to have to break some of the welds on the deactivated gun to get this new sight onto the existing top cover.

Rob (stencollector) helped me to get an extremely rare C No. 67 Mk. I scope by R.E.L. to complete my 80L8xxx Long Branch sniper rifle which is the version that had been equipped with that model. Obtaining this sight for his FN CDN EX2 is the least I could do as a way of saying "thank you." It is already packed and ready to mail to Rob.

Yes, I certainly have to agree with that statement.

    congrats,
I didn't see the sight until the auction was over - otherwise it would have cost considerably more....

I will bring you an emergency rear sight in Cowgary...

Darren, you would have really, really, wanted that sight to have beat me on it, but no doubt you would have cost me a lot more for it. I live for the adrenaline, so perhaps it might have been worthwhile to me if you had bid. This auction was over in about 20 seconds, if even that long. If you recall, you cost me a lot more for my EX1 that I got at Bud Haynes auction in Red Deer many years back. But looking back at it now, it was a bargain. No friends at an auction is the old saying...fair enough. I had travelled a lot further to get that one so I wasn't going home empty handed.

I thought if anybody had parts squirreled away, it would be you. Am now looking even more forward to the Calgary show.

Ah, forgot about the Ex1, but I wanted it because it was Dave Tomlinson's...
    - actually if I had known I was bidding against you I probably would have dropped out sooner, I just know that otherwise the next thing I buy from you will cost more...

    ;-)

I'm glad you got the unit optic. Al's went to the NHAM collection.

The National Historical Arms Museum (NHAM) is news to me. I never heard of them before, although looking at their board of directors there are a few familiar names and faces. Is it safe to assume that this museum will be void of government funding? I see they do have charitable status at least.

I hope they are able to make a go of it.
