They are also still allowed on live No5's where they still do their intended job of reducing the "signature" of the weapon also still on the legal straight pull weapons! Like the L1A1, and all the early deactivated weapons......(later deact's have them pinned and welded on to the weapon)
Why would anyone think up such contradictory legislation !!!!!

If Jim was to sell the rough casting/forging with NO hole drilled through it, would they then be legal to own in the U.K.? Surely then they would just be a lump of metal and not a flash hider, only becoming illegal if a hole were to be drilled/machined through???

See, that could be done for the UKicon, remove that operation from the CNC. Thing is, doing it for the layman could be beyond their means...some guy have no imagination. Yes, a lathe and drill it out, final cut with an end cut mill for bottoming...drill through is easy. If that would do it, still they aren't going to be cheaper so guys will want them done. If they're called sight base they might not be opened in the beginning by customs? They would look at the X-Ray and maybe not be concerned? Maybe not know anyway?
    Regards, Jim

Confusion arises because of what the legislation is designed to out law, i.e. any device designed to decrease the flash from the muzzle, and what we like to call the trumpet shaped piece of metal on the end of the barrel. The legislation is to catch devices which reduce or eliminate the visible firing signature of the "weapon" from an observer's point of view, so making it easier for a "shooter" to hide his position. However, that's not what the flash hider on a military weapon does; it reduces the flash visible to THE FIRER so that he/she isn't dazzled/blinded by their own muzzle flash.
Now; I'd not like to be a test case, but it might be something that an expert witness might consider when called on to give a learned opinion.
