A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. I thought of that too but am not sure without actually having one here that needed work how well it would go.

The last butt screw that I tried turning off the end on my lathe because it was slightly too long was hardened, not just hard, but rock hard and had to be ground off, in the end. I can't remember for sure if it was a smle or a No4 screw but suspect a smle screw. Unless you have a set of dill bits capable of drilling through especially hard steel, I suspect that you may be unable to do this.

Is anyone able to say whether the locking plate also performs the duel purpose of also helping to tie the rear of the smle fore-end together, please? The way that the locking plate is shaped suggests to me that it does. I have encountered 1 deactivated smle with this locking plate missing but obviously I don't know if it was like this when a live rifle.

It would NOT be permitted to be that way.

So do think that the locking plate does also help to tie the rear of the fore-end together, then Jim?

Ill see LOL i already grinded the bolt off flat and flush to the collar. Seems if you grind the square end off to where the round part on bolt starts its a perfect flush fit when fully screwed in. Nice and tight now but will have to see after firing.
