Things to do around Chincoteaque Island???

I live in Amish Country and they know a lot more about guns than you expect. They do hunt and shoot and it's somewhat of a myth that they don't have handguns either. I watched a fellow purchase one a couple of months ago. Not that they are likely to shoot someone with it but they do pass the time shooting much like anyone else does. I see them at the NHRA drag races at Maple Grove also.

They seem to do a lot of things you wouldn't expect them to. We attend a Hospice auction every year and I watched a young horse and buggy Amishman buy about $200 worth of Phillies baseball memorabilia. His grandpa wasn't real happy with him but not too much was said. I found myself wondering how he could watch or listen to the games enough to be a fan, plus the "waste" of spending money on frivolous things.

Spent the morning shopping after a slow morning at the hotel. Drove around the island then and spotted some ponies across the inlet. Got some good ice cream at the Island Creamery and at that point exhausted what there was to do on the island. Started heading north with the intention of stopping at whatever interested us and we ended up going to Berlin MD where there were several antique malls. I found nothing again, militaria seems in short supply there. Learned this was the town Runaway Bride was filmed in so did a bit of "Hollywood" tourism before going to the northern end of Assateaque. Found plenty of ponies there and a couple very close. So, if you want to see ponies, the northern, Maryland, end is the better place to go. If you want to watch the annual round up and swim, Chincoteague is the place to go. The ponies on the southern end are in two herds, both are owned by the fire department and both are kept separate and while not penned, they are fenced in various very large areas. The ponies on the northern end are not owned by anyone, are not fenced in and as far as I know, not rounded up every year. We still had a good time. Thinking next year maybe we will seek the PA elk herd.

If you were in Berlin you were close to my home, we could have sought out the elusive Md Sika deer herd. Nearly full rut by now, way more interesting than those boring tourist paths and those darned ponies.
Pretty slow around there is good after a long summer, the beaches get more and more congested every year. Bay country is a different kind of lifestyle, not much to do except hunt and fish. Very little other entertainment, unless you carve decoys.

Having spent a lot of my time in Philly as a British Policeman over the years, I always went out to Armish Country for a peaceful break, away from the City. It is lovely rich farming country around there. To see the way they handcraft stuff including their barn raising skills is something to be very proud of these days.

They are a very strict religion and its great to see it practiced and passed on to their kids, albeit there were those who sneaked off to the city to watch the ice hockey!!.

Great values being kept, such a short distance away from Philladelphia itelf, where standards drop through the floor and bring you back to planet earth!!

Not very peaceful anymore. Even in the short time I've been here, 30 years, it has undergone massive changes. A lot of the Amish have migrated to Ohio. Still plenty here but they shy away from the busier areas.
