If its cigarette smoke one wiff by a non smoker will nail that down. My dad was such a heavy smoker the windows in his car appeared to be tinted. I am pretty sure his lungs looked the same.
Good suggestions here on how to proceed regardless.

"...try some Windex..." Nothing, but you don't need ammonia to remove tobacco residue. Plain old soap and water will do that. Ammonia isn't good stuff to put on wood or steel.

It's actually a good wood cleaner. Not safe for all wood finishes though, moot point in this case.
